Wax-resist drawing and repeated dyeing create patterns with the depth and variation of handmade indigo cloth.
What It Is
Batik uses a resist to protect selected areas of cloth before dyeing. The result carries the small variations of drawing, dye and washing.
Craft Process
Four essential stages
Drawing
The composition is first mapped directly onto the cloth.
Wax Resist
Selected lines and fields are protected with applied wax.
Indigo Dyeing
Immersion and repeated handling build characteristic indigo depth.
Washing / Finishing
The resist is removed and the finished cloth is washed and dried.
